Ride, Sally Ride

Song: Mustang Sally, Wilson Picket (1966)

The Series:

There’s something about a sticky song lyric. That line that you can’t read without hearing the proper drum beat in your head. The sense memory that forces you to sing it, even without the music. The feeling you get when that line is paired with something entirely different and brings new meaning to join the old...

This poster:

Dr. Sally Ride became the first American woman to go to space on June 18, 1983. She was 32, and still holds the record for youngest American to go to space.

Before she went to space, Ride faced requests from NASA engineers about space makeup kits and tampons, and questions from reporters about uncontrolled weeping and her reproductive organs. She told one reporter, “I did not come to NASA to make history.”

After, she was an astronaut, same as any other - who answered a reporter’s query with “I’m sure it was the most fun I’ll ever have in my life.”

Though Ride had a career filled with firsts, she was determined to leave the door wide open behind her. From refusing sensational one-on-one interviews in favor of team debriefs after her historic first flight, to founding NASA’s office of Exploration, to leading STEM outreach programs (with JPL and UCSD) aimed at children, Ride used professionalism and teamwork to build a future filled with opportunities for everyone.

This 12x18 inch poster is professionally printed in the USA on sturdy C1S paper stock.
